More about SSL Certificates.:
If your website does not collect sensitive data, like credit card numbers or customer shopping cart data, you may not have needed an SSL certificate in the past. However, with browser notifications enforced by Google (as of 2017), it is important to be aware that without an SSL certificate your website will not load via HTTPS (the "s" stands for "secure"). This may effect your Google Search Rankings and cross-links from such searches depending on the web browser your customers use.
What is an SSL Certificate?
SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic-key installed on your web server that activates the padlock and the https protocol that allows secure connections from your web server to your site visitor's browser.
Do I really need an SSL Certificate?
It is probably not absolutely critical. However, your visitors may be warned via a browser pop-up that your site is not secure without a validate SSL certificate. Browsers such as Chrome even block visablity to your site. Google favor sites that have SSL ceritificates in place and therefore a "not secure" pop-up could be bad for business. However, it is important to note that web sites that do not have SSL certificates are not dangerous or infected, but rather the data being transmitted is just not encryted.
